Departmental Summary

Pharmaceutics is a core part of pharmacy course and is related to the Manufacturing, formulation and dispending of dosage forms or pharmaceutical products. Pharmaceutics course which provides the knowledge and practice of manufacturing, storage, preservation, utilization and pharmacokinetics of drug products. It includes the study of advanced drug delivery systems, nanotechnology based delivery systems and biotechnology based drug delivery systems also. The department of Pharmaceutics is involved in imparting knowledge in the various fields of dosage form design, modern dispensing practices, preformulation studies, development/manufacturing of pharmaceutical formulations and novel drug delivery systems.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry is the study of drugs including drug designing, drug discovery, drug development, chemical synthesis, physical and Spectral Characterization, Analytical and Bio analytical Method development. Studying pharmaceutical chemistry allows students to contribute to life-saving remedies, enhance the speed of delivery of new medications, and help others. Pharmaceutical chemistry also includes other branches of study such as pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug metabolism. Medicinal chemistry is one which deals with chemistry of medicines. It is an important branch of chemistry as it directly relates to health care. Medicinal chemistry tries to interlink health, disease and medicine in a scientific manner. It purely emphasizes on the chemistry in medicine, mechanism of action, synthesis. Analytical method development and validation is another important area during the development of drug substance and drug product in the pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmacology is the branch of biology concerned with the study of drug action. More specifically, it is the scientific and systematic study of drug with on living organism that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function. The two main areas of pharmacology are pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Pharmacodynamics studies the effects of a drug on biological systems, and Pharmacokinetics studies the effects of biological systems on a drug. Clinical Pharmacology is the scientific and systematic study of drug on human being. The study of drugs requires knowledge of the biological system affected. With the increasing drive towards biological research to describe systems, pharmacologists may consider themselves as main scientists.

Pharmacognosy is the branch of bioscience which involves an objective study of crude drugs from natural sources treated scientifically and it encompasses the knowledge of history, distribution, cultivation, collection, processing for market and preservation, the study of sensory, chemical and structural characters and the uses of crude drugs.
It also includes study of other materials used in pharmacy such as suspending, disintegrating, flavouring agents, filtering aids etc. and substances like antibiotics, allergens, hallucinogenic and poisonous plants, pesticides, raw materials for the production of oral contraceptives etc.
